“Evangelism” (Continued)
We have a number of friends nearby recently and very magnanimously concerned with evangelism and reaching out to the lost as well as some correspondence with others over the miles dealing with the same topic. All nobel. It just seems to be “THE topic” lately. God tends to work in “seasons,” in our lives and it goes well for us when we cooperate with Him when that happens and really dig deep, again as some we know are doing.
But I read today’s My Utmost For His Highest by Oswald Chambers, and again, the approach, the heart, the “gut” of a thing we call “evangelism” seems to center around simply our daily devotion to Him and to one another. That daily devotion may of course entail energy spent specifically on trying to talk to someone about his/her soul — a co-worker, a grocery store clerk, a repairman in the home (as we had this AM and some energy was put forth to talk to him about his soul, unfortunately interrupted by a conference call), a note and a phone number left on a car in a parking lot (yesterday), etc. But it continues to be highlighted to me that it’s out of fellowship with Him. The “technique” that continues to be highlighted in scripture is that when it’s all “boiled down,” there exists no technique. :-) It’s daily devotion to Him, to one another, and our abiding in Him — our ability to “hear Him” — that accomplishes the saving of souls (“bearing fruit”) around us (John 15; John 12:32; 2 Corinthians 2:14-17 speaks of being “in procession behind Christ” and as we walk this life of devotion to only Him out, we spread an aroma that is attractive to some — and to others, it angers).
